Bethel St. Paul Church

Built in 1923, the original Bethel Church was affectionally known by the community as the “Turtle Soup Church” by virtue of a decades old tradition of preparing and serving turtle soup that began in 1929.

With a rich background in historical renovation projects, Schaefer was entrusted with revitalizing this historic structure. Over the course of just four months, Schaefer’s team completed a comprehensive 5,400 SF renovation encompassing the sanctuary, chancel/altar area, narthex, and balcony. As part of the building renovation, ADA-compliant space, custom millwork, lighting system upgrades, paint video screen, modernization of the audio and video system were also updated.

To brighten the church’s traditionally dark Gothic design, the updated finishes introduced a clean, updated aesthetic. This includes a state-of-the-art lighting system with dimming features, a bright color palette, and custom millwork throughout. The space was modernized with the addition of two video screen walls, updated audio and video equipment.

The existing balcony was enlarged by approximately 750 SF. and was encased with a custom wood and glass wall that separates narthex from the main sanctuary. As a special touch to the completed construction, all 32 pews were refurbished—crafted by Schaefer’s master carpenters—culminating in a new sound booth at the rear of the sanctuary.
