The Art of Historic Building Preservation and Stabilization

US Marine Hospital - One of many successful Historic Preservations projects.

Our team has been successfully preserving the historic fabric of Louisville’s treasures for several decades now, and this challenge is taken very seriously here at SCHAEFER General Contracting Services.

Renovation and stabilization work on historic structures requires specialized skills, and it is not for the faint of heart. One must be part historian, part detective (how/why did they do that?) and have the ability to think several steps ahead of the task at hand, all while maintaining the building’s historical elements and providing a safe work environment. Sprinkle in a few government agencies who have competing requirements and codes, and you have a recipe for an exciting project! In the end, it’s all worth it to know you had a part in preserving the past, so future generations can understand and enjoy Louisville’s rich history.

Sometimes called “adaptive re-use”, giving these structures new life and modern amenities, while preserving historical materials and character, is much more environmentally friendly than moving dirt and trees to build a new structure.

Resist the urge to be intimidated by a bit of wear and tear, and envision the possibilities that an historic building can provide … a beautiful, quaint environment and many more years of use, once preserved properly. We’d be honored to show you how.
